April 2010 HR Quarterly Index Released

Finding and Keeping Staff is Firmly Back on the Radar

The top three critical issues facing businesses, according to the Quarterly Index Report, have remained the same for the past year. These are Lack of Work or Sales, Cash Flow and the Economic Climate.

A change in focus for business is now upon us with Finding and Keeping Staff now entering the top three for the first time in 18 months.

This development coupled with the concerning result that 46% of businesses are dissatisfied with their employees accountability and contribution to the financial result could be a sign that the critical skills shortage and employee market of the pre GFC boom may be just around the corner.
Talk of economic recovery and optimistic forecast has been the theme of 2010 however in recent weeks the tone has shifted. There has been a slight correction in the past month as evidenced by the downgrade of expectations of sales, profitability and wages growth. This is certainly not a negative result but a rationalisation of the jubilant New Year paradigm.
2010 will certainly be an interesting year as the Australian business sector continues through uncharted territory.
